Post First Contact – Kat Green (Kat de Falla and guest Rachel Green)
Do you believe in ghosts?
That there could be restless spirits
walking among the living that only a few can see or feel.
RACHEL: I don’t consider myself a paranormal
expert. I don’t even consider myself a sensitive but I believe. I’ve even seen
a ghost. It was in the basement at an old movie theater I worked at in college.
It was a bald man in an old fashioned tux carrying a trumpet down a hallway. I
left by the only exit and my manager couldn’t find him down there a minute
later. I also heard a trumpet being played late one night when I was closing
the theater. Since then, I’ve been sure there are
things that go bump in the night.
KAT: I lived in a crazy scarey haunted house. Seriously, we had two sets of paranormal investigators through the place and they STILL recommended we leave. I am a believer. I recommend to anyone who wants an "old house" to ask the previous owners if anything strange happened, because if you're buying a haunted house...don't you want to know?

On to the blog post!
Rachel and I co-wrote First Contact, book one in the Sloane Osborne Haunts for Sale Series. This book takes place in
Waukesha, Wisconsin which is a city about twenty minutes west of Milwaukee. The
haunted house Sloane finds in Waukesha is fictional, but here are a three of
the most haunted houses in Wisconsin.
1. The Octagon House – Fond du Lac
This
eight sided house was built in 1856 and contains twelve rooms and nine secret
passageways. There’s also a tunnel that connects the house to the woodshed and
a small storage room beneath the front door both of which were used to hide
runaway slaves as part of the Underground Railroad.
People
have reported a variety of different paranormal manifestations at the house
from items moved and doors slamming by themselves to footfalls and cold hands
on their shoulders. There are cold spots in the house and often the sounds of
children laughing and playing. Today the house has been restored and is used
for haunted house tours. The docents report there are strange sightings almost
every week.
2. Summerwind (Formerly Lamont Mansion)
– Land O’Lakes
The
ruins of Summerwind lie along the shores of West Bay Lake in northeastern
Wisconsin. Even though it burned down after being struck several times by
lightning in 1988, it is still one of the scariest haunted houses in the state.
It
was built as a summer house for the Lamont family in 1916. Though some say the
house was haunted even when the Lamonts lived there, the first reported
sighting was when Mr. Lamont himself fired a gun at a ghost he thought was an
intruder. The family left the house just after the incident and didn’t return.
After
Lamonts death the house was sold a few times with no reports of paranormal
activity until the 1970s when the Hinshaw family lived there for six months.
The parents and children all reported vague shapes and shadows, mumbled voices
in darkened rooms and the ghost of a woman floating near the dining room. When
the family tried to make some renovations, a human corpse was found in a secret
compartment in a closet. They left the corpse where it was but things
deteriorated after that until Mr. Hinshaw had a mental breakdown and his wife
attempted suicide.
3. Brumder Mansion – Milwaukee
This
red brick house is now used as a Bed and Breakfast but was also used as a
boarding house, a speak-easy during the Prohibition, a youth chapel, a
Christian coffee house and as a private residence. The diversity of ownership
may be way so many ghosts haunt the building today.
For
the most part, the hauntings at this house are benevolent. Guests have reported
doors that slam by themselves, phantom footsteps, and breakable objects falling
from the walls but remaining whole. An older woman haunts the Gold Room, while
a young girl’s spirit roams the third floor. Most of the time things move about
on their own, doors lock by themselves, and there’s a playful ghost who will
wake you at night, jumping on the bed.
